Colonel Lawrence ‘Larry” Miller retired from active duty on 1 June 2020 after 30 years of continuous active service. He was promoted to Colonel on 1 December 2011 and his last assignment was as the Commanding Officer, Wounded Warrior Regiment, Quantico, Va. A native of Florida, he graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology and Political Science and was commissioned through Platoon Leaders Class in April 1990.
Colonel Miller’s assignments included Rifle Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 2d Marines; Heavy Machinegun Platoon Commander and Executive Officer, Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 2 Marines, Assistant and Operations Officer, Marine Combat Training Battalion (East), Commanding Officer, Advance Infantry Training Company and Executive Officer, Infantry Training Battalion (East). Commanding Officer, India Company and Weapons Company, Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion 6th Marines as part of the 24th and 22nd Marine Expeditionary Units respectfully. 6th Marine Regimental Operations Officer. He commanded both the Infantry Training Battalion (East) and Advanced Infantry Training Battalion (East), School of Infantry (East).
Combat assignments include: Feb-Aug 2003, assigned as an Individual Augment to the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance (ORHA), Office of Secretary of Defense in support of Operation Iraq Freedom I. While assigned to ORHA, which later became Coalitional Provisional Authority (CPA), he served as the Force Protection Officer/Ground Force Commander for the Presidential Palace, Baghdad, Iraq; 2004-2005, served as the Battalion Executive Officer for 3d Battalion, 8th Marines, 2d Marine Division, during Operation Iraq Freedom 2.2 & 3.1/ 04-06 in the Fallujah Area of Operation.
His external assignments include; Irregular Warfare / Crisis Action Plans Officer, Joint Force Development and Integration Division, J-7, Joint Staff, The Pentagon; Fleet Marine Officer and Director for Plans and Exercises, 5th Fleet/US Naval Forces Central Command, Naval Support Activity, Bahrain.
His Headquarter Marine Corps Assignments include: General Officer Matters Officer, Manpower Management, Quantico, Va.; Expeditionary Strike Group Action Officer, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, Va.; Branch Head, Manpower Management Integration Branch, Manpower Management and Executive Assistant/Chief of Staff, to Deputy Commandant of Manpower & Reserve Affairs, Quantico, VA.
Colonel Miller’s personal military awards include the Legion of Merit (gold star in lieu of second award), Bronze Star (gold star in lieu of second award), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (two gold stars in lieu of third award), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal (gold star in lieu of second award), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal, Combat Action Ribbon, and Basic Parachutist Wings. His civilian award includes being an Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm.
Colonel Miller is a graduate of the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Weapons Tactics Instructor Course, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Joint Force Staff College.
